Upcoming Post

In a few days I will put up a post focusing on Canadian design label, Greta Constantine. I was able to ask Kirk Pickersgill, one half of the Greta duo (the other being Stephen Wong) a couple of questions, so once I've put everything together, I'll post what I have!

Accessory Spotlight: The Headband

There are many material things I love in this world; cookware, cameras, movies. This being a blog about the fashion conglomerate, I am going to focus (for this post at least) on an item I simply cannot get enough of: The timeless Headband and it's offspring.

For me, the headband, the hair tie/clip and the head wrap is the cherry on top to a look. After getting a drastically short hair cut, the headband entered at full force when my hair suddenly wasn't long enough. I buy them, modify them and make them to suit my style and taste. For example, a basic thin black plastic head band became adorable once I attached to it a white bow hair clip, aside and slightly askew. With my slowly growing head of hair no longer feeling naked, I now had a preppy look often seen on the head of Leighton Meester's character, Blair, on Gossip Girl.

My collection ranges from those I've made out of scrap fabric or lace, to the stiff hard plastic variety (the pink one below) that make it hard to wear glasses at the same time. They're all kept in a medium sized basket (now overflowing) on my dresser. I would get a larger basket, however my dresser wouldn't be big enough to put it on.

My basket:

On almost daily trips to the mall, I head to my hair "prettifying" mecca: Ardene. They have a 9'x9' foot wall on headbands and head wraps alone, all arranged in a textile rainbow, plus mini aisles of hair clips/ties of varying sizes and styles. The prices are unbelievably easy on my pocket, from 3.99 each to 3 for $1o. Some of which come as a set, which adds to the value and my savings . I am quite sure the salespeople are either tired of seeing me, or are grateful that I am contributing my money to their quarterly profits.

For even more penny-pinching on my part (and somewhat of an impulse) I go to Dollarama and pick up a few cheapies and hope that they last. My recent purchase was an 8-pack of thin elastic bands in metallic varying colours, much to my mother's dismay.

Is this an addiction? Not in the slightest. Once my hair grows out to a length where headbands are no longer necessary for me, I'll use what I have on hand to go with my varying hairstyles. I'll probably have enough by then to start selling them back to stores.

M·A·C Has a New Baby!

Baby Bloom

M·A·C Cosmetics (every makeup fanatics favourite label) has a new collection for the ones who want to look great in the Summer sun, while protecting their skin at the same time. The beautiful Baby Bloom collection consists of five sheer shades of liquid lip balms with an SPF of 20 (Full Of Grace is my fave!) and five light-as-air tinted moisturizers with a SPF of15.

Especially with the heat, humidity and perspiring that Summer undoubtedly brings, painting on the makeup normally used in the colder seasons will do you no favours. This M·A·C collection is guaranteed to keep you looking naturally chic all through the hazy days.

You know what? With UV rays a constant year-round, you might as well designate this collection permanently to your everyday makeup bag. Your skin will thank you.

Mark Your Calendars...

*November 14, 2009*

Stella McCartney, Karl Lagerfeld, Viktor & Rolf and most recently Matthew Williamson, (to name a few) are designers who lent their creative hand to create a limited line for retail giant, H&M. For me at least, the one coming up next is a biggie. JIMMY CHOO. For H&M!! Yeah!...

I have a very minimal budget, so to own a pair of Choo shoes is a pipe dream (or more realistically, something I would have to save up for a long time). Well it won't be for long. On November 14 2009, Jimmy Choo shoes, bags and accessories will enter select H&M stores, albeit for a moment, given that once the store doors open crowds of people will run to get their hands on a remarkably great deal and most likely will sell out in record time, as fellow collaborators of H&M have done.

Jimmy Choo president and founder, Tamara Mellon said to Vogue.com UK of the design partnership, "...a collection appealing to fashion savvy, street smart women, and to be including some great pieces for men, too...Jimmy Choo will bring to H&M a sophisticated, fashion forward, accessible and glamorous collection..."

Here's a sneak peak of what's to come:
